GlenDronach Distillery was founded in 1826 by James Allardice Founded near Forge, Huntley, Aberdeenshire, in the Scottish Highlands. The distillery was the second distillery to apply for legal production of whiskey under the Duty Act of 1823.

In 1960, GlenDronach was acquired by William Teach & Sons. Over the years, the winery closed in 1996 and reopened in 2002. It was acquired by the Chivas Brothers in 2005 and later became part of the French beverage company Pernod-Richard, and was acquired by the Ban Riach Distilling Company in 2008.

The distillery converted from coal-fired stills to steam heating in 2005. This was the last distillery in Scotland to be converted. Today, only Japan's Yoichi Distillery among major producers still uses coal-fired stills. The distillery draws water from Dronach Creek on the distillery grounds and has four stills. Two of the wash stills have a capacity of 13,600 liters, and the other two shochu stills have half a capacity. In order to improve the quality of the original wine, both stills have refluxers.

Eventually, they launched a core range of 12, 15, 18 and 21 year old whiskeys. Over the past few years they have become one of the most anticipated and valued Scotch whiskeys, winning numerous awards in international competitions.

GlenDronach distillery usually uses high quality sherry casks. It has a long history of producing sherry-flavored ales and aging whiskey in a combination of Oroso sherry casks or Oroso and Pedro Ximenez (PX) sherry casks. The cask features a deep amber color and rich, complex flavours, perfectly combining the much-loved sweet, dried fruit notes from the PX sherry aging, with the drier, citrus zest from the Oroso sherry casks , fruity and nutty taste.
